iPhone 15: What to Expect From Apple's Next iPhone

Will the iPhone 15 get optimized for the Vision Pro headset? A look at the rumored new feature and other reports we’ve heard so far.

Rumor has it that the Dynamic Island feature will appear on all upcoming iPhone 15 models, not just the Pro.

Apple

The anticipation (and rumors) for the fall arrival of Apple’s next iPhone, rumored to be called the iPhone 15, haven’t diminished despite the revelation of the company’s new augmented reality headset. These reports, together with the EU decision requiring USB-C charging on devices sold in Europe last year, might lead to a variety of design changes from Apple’s customary style. A USB-C port will the iPhone 15 have? Will Apple raise the price of the iPhone in 2023? Any mention of the “iPhone 15” will it receive? Although no one outside of Apple is certain, these rumors will no doubt pique our interest until Apple hosts its next iPhone presentation (likely in September). To give us an idea of what we might see, these are some of the largest and most reliable rumors we have seen thus far.

iPhone 15: Upgraded Ultra Wideband

The iPhone 15 will have an updated Ultra Wideband processor, known as the U1 chip by Apple, in order to better work with the brand-new AR headset, the Vision Pro, according to renowned Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo. UWB is a short-range wireless communication protocol that is frequently used to find out where things are. As you approach your car with your phone, it can locate your Apple AirTag and unlock it. Kuo said recently on Twitter that everything here is a part of Apple’s larger plan to “build a more competitive ecosystem for Vision Pro.”

iPhone 15: Wireless charging upgrade

All iPhone 15 models will support 15W wireless charging utilizing the Qi2 open standard, according to a May report from ChargerLab, a reputable power-related website. If this information proves to be accurate, the iPhone 15 may usher in a brand-new era of wireless charging technology that can fully recharge the gadget. Prior to this, Apple had set a 7.5W cap on open wireless charging standards, leaving Apple MagSafe approved accessories with a full 15W charge speed.

iPhone 15 camera: Periscope-style telephoto lens arrives

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities and a well-known Apple watcher, predicts that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will come with a periscope-style telephoto lens. Higher optical zoom levels are possible with this type of telephoto lens, with Kuo predicting that the iPhone 15 Pro Max may include a 6x optical zoom. The iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 3x optical zoom falls short of competitors’ 10x optical zoom models like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Unknownz21, a well-known leaker and Twitter user, recently confirmed that the Pro Max model will include the unique lens, giving new life to this story.

iPhone 15 design: Hello USB-C, goodbye Lightning

Despite years of rumors, the transition from a Lightning Port to a USB-C port may ultimately take place in 2023. That may be the result of pressure from the European Union, which has long advocated for a uniform charging norm. The bloc was able to establish laws in 2022 mandating that if Apple wants to sell its iPhones in the EU, such devices must have USB-C connections by 2024.

The switch from a Lightning Port to a USB-C port may finally occur in 2023, despite years of rumors to the contrary. It’s possible that this is the consequence of pressure from the European Union, which has long supported a standard for uniform billing. The union was able to pass legislation in 2022 that stipulates that by 2024, all iPhones sold in the EU must have USB-C ports.

“There are larger ecosystem, security, and accessory considerations with the power/data connector, so I think it is more likely that Apple moves all iPhones [globally] to USB-C in the iPhone 16 timeframe to comply with European regulations,” he told CNET in an email.

iPhone 15 design: Dynamic Island expands to all models

With the iPhone 15 lineup, Apple is probably going to keep selling four different iPhone models. According to rumors, all versions will have a largely similar look, with the exception that the Dynamic Island cutout from the iPhone 14 Pro is expected to appear on all of them.

This speculation originates from display analyst Ross Young, who also stated in a September tweet that the supply chain prevents base iPhone 15 models from having a greater refresh rate than Apple’s Pro iPhones.

iPhone 15: Solid-state buttons come to pro iPhone 15 models

Another Kuo forecast has been circulating, but this time the analyst believes Apple will further differentiate between its base and Pro models in the years to come. He stated in a tweet from October that one way he anticipates it to happen is by replacing the normal keys seen on today’s devices with solid-state volume and power buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro models.

The haptic feedback used by the solid-state buttons, which Kuo claims will resemble the home button on the iPhone SE and iPhone 7, simulates the physical experience of touching a button. This style of button’s obvious benefit is that it also prevents water from entering.

iPhone 15 Power: Increased RAM for pro models

The Pro variants of the iPhone 15 series will receive an increase in RAM to 8GB from 6GB to accompany the anticipated A17 Bionic chipset, claims Taiwanese research firm TrendForce. According to TrendForce, base models will continue to receive 6GB RAM. According to a MacRumors story that cited analyst Jeff Pu’s study, this allegation is also reportedly supported by a research report from Haitong International Securities.

iPhone 15 price: Up, up and away?

However, if speculations of a luxurious iPhone 15 Ultra come to pass, the price range’s maximum limit might be raised. Next year, the iPhone 15 Pro Max might be replaced by the speculated Ultra variant, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. This is consistent with Kuo’s expectations that Apple would further differentiate between the iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max models. Other speculations, however, claim that the iPhone 15 Ultra will be an improvement over the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The entry-level iPhone 14 model with 128GB of storage costs $829 in the US, while the most expensive iPhone 14 Pro Max with 1TB of storage costs $1,599. The telephoto camera with a variable zoom lens, which is the camera configuration believed to feature on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, will be included on the iPhone 15 Ultra, according tipper Revengus.

iPhone 15 Ultra camera: Variable zoom

The telephoto camera with a variable zoom lens, which is the camera configuration believed to feature on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, will be included on the iPhone 15 Ultra, according tipper Revengus. For a variety of reasons, including the fact that the size and design of phone cameras place limitations on the types of lenses that may be utilized, variable optical zoom (continuous zoom) cameras aren’t typically seen on smartphones.

iPhone 15: Launch and release timeline

Since Apple typically hosts its annual iPhone event in September, we anticipate that the timeframe will be the same for the iPhone 15. Shortly after, generally on Friday of the next week, new iPhones are released. Apple occasionally defers the release of certain models, particularly when introducing a new design or size. Thus, more than one release date for the iPhone 15 lineup is conceivable.

Here’s what we know:

  • Apple tends to hold its events on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Apple’s iPhone 14 event was held on Wednesday Sept. 7, while its iPhone 13 event was held on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
  • iPhone release dates are typically a week and a half after Apple’s announcements.
  • In general, new iPhones are released on a Friday, around the third week of September. For the iPhone 13, preorders began Sept. 17 and the phones went on sale Sept. 24.
